Thingie Post

It's our fifth anniversary today and ordinarily I'd want it to be about just us two, but today of all days I can't help but think how much I love the man for making me a baby that grew into a squirmy little boy who brings his sharks and spiders into my lap with him, who acts like I made his day by just walking in through the front door, who totally takes his cue from his dad in how to love this maddening woman in their lives. I could have had so many possible sons but it took a Ayesha-Vicky combination to create a Bheblu babu.

Happy anniversary, Joe Turp. Here's to us and to the saucy little tail we seem to have acquired somewhere down the line.

Thingie Post

You know what I like about the man?

I like how he lets me whine my way under his quilt (when I was the one who snootily got herself a separate quilt this winter) and then allows me to warm my icy hands and feet against his warmer body. I know it must be annoying as hell and he better never try it with me, but I appreciate him letting me do it.

Thingie Post

So I'm not getting around posting much else, but I'm really trying to keep the thingies on track.

So let me see, how do I love V? Let me count the ways.

I love him when I nudge him out of bed early in the morning to take the garbage or Ally out. He does it half asleep but he does it.

I love him when he shrugs and says, let's eat out. He knows I am in no mood to cook.

I love how he just knows so much about the stuff that interests him. His interests (old movies and cars) are rather cooler than mine (kid lit). Well, at least one of us is cool in company.

And I love him even more when I close the door on the boys and walk out for fun with my girls. He gets this, that I need to do this.

Thingie Post

Vicky's baby cousin just got married. It's been a really busy time. But in that time, I was reminded of lots of things that I like about the man.

I like him in a suit. He looks really sharp in them, especially with a tie. He also wears a dhuti-punjabi better than most men I know.

I like that he gets me refills and glasses of water and second servings even if I don't ask particularly nicely.

I like how he is resigned to his role in my life as the Jewellery Putter-On.

I also like how he is resigned to however long it takes me to get ready.

But most of all, I like how it doesn't dent his pride in the least bit to help me with my footwear. Now, there's a man for you.

Thingie Post

The thing I like the most about Vicky today is how it feels when he holds me. Just so that you know, Joe.

The thing I liked about him yesterday was how good he looked even without trying. He may not be film star material but damn, he's hot.

Thingie Post

I know, I know, all I do is run around catching up on these but here are some things I love about Vicky --

I love that he has so much fun with his cousins. He has more cousins than he can count and he gets along with almost all of them.

I love his sketches. He is really talented but since a mere wife is not given a sketch I'm afraid I have none to show you.

This is going to sound weird, but I love him when he's drunk. He's a happy drunk.

It's cute how he reads this blog and has a whole "Who, me?" thing about it. (Hi, Vicky.)

Erma Bombeck will be surprised by this one but nobody who knows my father will raise an eyebrow -- having my father try to teach me to drive nearly scared me off driving for ever. The only reason I can reverse the car or actually contemplate hitting the road is because Vicky made me learn. I'm still a scaredy-cat but at least I'm a scaredy-cat who can drive if she really has to. For that, I am duly grateful.

I appreciate how protective he is of his mother even when she is driving him nuts. It gives me hope.

May not post for a while. See you when I do. Till then, read this.

Thingie Post

First, everybody who would like to do the thingie, please, feel free. You don't have to use the same name or credit me or even thank me, it's all yours. What I would like, if you are doing such a thing, is for you to leave me a link sometime. I'd love to read your posts.

Now, the thing I like about Vicky on 10 January 2010 is an easy one -- I love how he makes begun bhaja (fried brinjals). He fries them in not very thick circles, nice and salty, with a crisp outer layer that somehow stays crisp, while the inner flesh stays soft. I also like his cheese omelettes, as does the boy.

Ancient Bengali Wisdom

I have finally worked out why we use jeera in chholar dal: to camouflage the insects.

I bet all this time you thought it was for the taste.

Thingie Post

The thing I like about Vicky today is how he understood that it was the tiredness yelling, and that I badly needed a cup of coffee.

The other thing that I like about him today is how he offers to drop people off no matter how tired he is. He drops my friends and family off at homes/taxi points as willingly as he reaches his own family and friends.

Thingie for the Month

I couldn't come up with a name that didn't sound disgustingly saccharine or inappropriately sarcastic (I know, I'm losing my touch) so let's just call it my thingie for this month. It's a blogging resolution for January, as it were.

As some of you may remember, Vicky and I got married towards the end of January 2006. This year we celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary. To mark the occasion, every day I shall post a line here about something that I really like or appreciate about the man. Even when I'm raging mad at him. And I shall not let those posts mock him in any way. No, not even the tiniest bit. Judging by this post, it can evidently be done -- I learn something new every day -- and it shall be done. Since I'm starting a week late, some of the days will carry extra appreciation.

The thing that I like about Vicky on 8 January 2011 is how he lets me 'borrow' his soft jute slippers to wear around the house while wandering around cold and barefoot himself.

The other thing I like about Vicky today is how much he enjoys sharing his good stuff -- his special occasion alcohol, his new toys, his innovations. Not everybody gives that freely.

A Redeeming Factor

Mostly these mens I have around my place spend their time annoying me. But I find they do have a redeeming factor or two. I can, for instance, go up to either and demand a kiss. Sometimes they even oblige.

It's useless to deny it.

I'm hopelessly addicted. Since yesterday I've been trying to stay away from this blog and failing... and it isn't even about food!

It's better than a Mills'n'Boon, isn't it? No guilty sense of illicit/lowbrow pleasure, at least. You read a letter, sigh over the adorable photograph and think of how much you would like one of those things that she is talking about.

At some point or another I think most of us can identify with a letter or two. It's like PostSecret in its way. And I for one wrote so many, many letters to the man I would one day marry. Thankfully, those conversations stayed safe in my head so the man I did marry cannot ever blackmail me with them... but while on the subject, if ever I learnt to be careful what I asked for, that taught me! Vicky has pretty much everything I thought to ask for and all the annoying little things that I never thought to blacklist. Dammit.

That's what people do say!

My eyes. And his smile.

Aunts Aren't Gentlemen

I spent an hour on the phone with Mejopishi (my aunt) this morning. While chatting of this and that I airily mentioned that I was planning to divorce Vicky sometime soon (my reasons change but you can choose from frustration, annoyance, been with him too long already, bored of the scenery, just feeling cussed etc. Of course, he keeps the boy.)

She jumped at the chance and wanted to know when I was planning to "free" him. So that they could finally find him a proper, "more suitable" wife. Because he is like a son to her and since my brother shows no plans of getting hitched, she'd content herself with settling Vicky well.

All I want to know is, whose side is she on anyway?

I weighed myself on Sona's scales the other day and despite his 'discounts' I still couldn't budge that damn needle from the 65 kg mark.

So I decided to go on a diet, right after I finished my kebab-paratha-mutton biriyani dinner. The next morning seemed like a good time to start.

I don't think I've eaten so much and such unhealthy food as I ate in the day that followed.

It looks like I'm safer sticking to my normal diet.

Day #1

You know how they say that what you do on January 1 will set the tone for the year to come? If that is indeed true then in 2011 I will regularly

1. come home late in the morning after breakfast out with my friends -- after partying all night with Vicky's gang

2. sleep little as I try to get the chores finished to free up more time to socialise

3. bake cakes that turn out well enough and are easy to throw together but take hours to cook and yet garner lots of compliments

4. eat very, very well at birthday parties (kochuri-hing chorchori, fish fry, gurer payesh, dimer debil, fish chops, luchi-alur dom, mishti, plum cake, singara and I've lost track of the rest)

5. socialise on my own while Vicky sleeps and Rahul makes his own plans that rarely involve any parents!

6. get good news at night after working hard all evening hoping for it

So how does your year look?
